Food

Croatian food is usually composed of heavy Slavic meals in the continental areas east of Zagreb while on the coastal regions it is dominated by seafood dishes and Italian pastas. The cuisine generally varies for the different regions of Croatia.

In and around Zagreb, the regional food is turkey with pasta or what locals call Purica s Mlincima and the spicy Slavonian Kulen which is considered one of the world’s best sausages. In the coastal regions of Croatia, seafood dishes are popular. Squid dishes and smoked ham dishes are a must to taste in this region. Also try out their internationally acclaimed Ston Bay’s oyster which can surely satisfy your appetite or try out their salted sardines which is a cheaper yet tasty alternative.

There are also a lot of excellent wines produced in Croatia. The red wines being made in Dalmatia such as Kastelet, Plavac and Bavic are excellent choices that go best with meat and fish dishes. Their popular white wines include Posip and Pljesivica.

Locally produced Croatian liquor that you may want to taste are the Maraschim made from maraska cherries, Kruskovac made from pears and the Orahovac made from walnuts.
